What counts

A qualifying renovation is permanent work that lets the person get into, move around in, or function in their home, or that reduces the risk of harm there. The home must be one they own or live in, or a home they will move into within the year.

Usually eligible
- Wheelchair ramps and widened doorways
- Walk-in bathtubs and wheel-in showers
- Grab bars, handrails and non-slip flooring
- Lowered counters and cabinets
- Stair lifts and residential elevators
Not eligible
- Routine repairs and maintenance, housekeeping and gardening
- Household appliances and audio-visual equipment
- Financing costs, such as interest on a renovation loan
- Work done mainly to raise the home’s value
- Your own labour and tools, and work by a relative who isn’t registered for GST/HST

How much is the Home Accessibility Tax Credit?
14% of eligible renovation expenses for 2026 (14.5% for 2025), on up to $20,000 a year per qualifying person. The most it can be worth is $2,800 a year.
Who qualifies for the Home Accessibility Tax Credit?
The renovation must be for someone who is eligible for the Disability Tax Credit at any time in the year, or 65 or older at the end of it. That person, or certain relatives who support them, can claim.
Can I claim the same expense as a medical expense?
Yes, if it also qualifies as a medical expense. CRA allows the same expense under both credits.
Do I need to send receipts?
No, but keep them. CRA can ask for proof of the expense and who did the work.
