Who can get it

You can get the Canada Disability Benefit if you are:

  • between 18 and 64 years old
  • approved for the Disability Tax Credit (check if you might be)
  • a resident of Canada for income tax purposes
  • a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, registered or entitled to be registered under the Indian Act, a protected person, or a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the past 18 months

You, and your spouse or common-law partner if you have one, must have filed your 2025 federal tax return to get payments. You can apply up to 6 months before your 18th birthday.

How the amount is worked out

Everyone starts from the same maximum. The benefit then drops as income rises above a set level. Some working income is left out first, so taking a job doesn't cost you the whole benefit.

The numbers for each payment year
RuleJuly 2025 to June 2026July 2026 to June 2027
Maximum$200.00 a month$204.20 a month

Income before any reduction, couple$32,500$33,182.50*
Reduction20 cents per dollar above that level (10 cents each if both spouses get the benefit)

* The regulations raise the income levels by the same inflation factor as the maximum and the working-income amounts. Canada.ca publishes $204.20, $10,210 and $14,294 for 2026–27, which all reflect a 2.1% increase, so we apply 2.1% to $23,000 and $32,500 as well.

A worked example from canada.ca

Dan is single and earned $35,000 from work in 2024, with no other income. The first $10,000 of work income is left out, so $25,000 counts. That's $2,000 above $23,000, so his benefit drops by $400 a year (20% of $2,000). He gets $2,000 for the year: $166.67 a month from July 2025 to June 2026.

Back payments and the $150 supplement

Service Canada can pay up to 24 months back from when it receives your application, but not for months before June 2025. Canada.ca also lists a one-time $150 supplemental payment, issued on September 17, 2026.
